Connecticut gave up most of its claims to the federal government so that the Northwest Territory could be created. However, it reserved the northeast corner of the territory for itself.

This area came to be known as the Connecticut Western Reserve. The Western Reserve had two parts. The western part of the region was known as the Fire Lands. Author of A listing of entrymen on lands in Carroll Co., Ohio, A listing of entrymen on lands in Wayne Co., Ohio, Index of women from early years in southeast Ohio, A listing of entrymen on lands south of the Connecticut Western reserve in Mahoning Co., Ohio, A listing of entrymen on lands in Coshocton Co., Ohio, A listing of entrymen on lands in Washington Co., Ohio, A listing of entrymen.

"The part of Ohio most intimately associated with Connecticut is the Western Reserve. When Connecticut yielded her claims to any Pennsylvania land by a deed of cession to Congress in [see Susquehanna Settlers], the state specifically 'reserved' a strip of land bordering upon Lake Erie and Pennsylvania, miles wide from east to west.

After the formation of the United States, Connecticut ceded most of its western lands to the national government but exempted approximately 3, acres lying north of latitude 41 degrees and extending miles westward from the Pennsylvania border.

This became its Western Reserve. Connecticut ceded to the U.S. all her western lands claims, except the area of the Reserve, on 14 Sept. Indian title to the lands east of the CUYAHOGA RIVER was extinguished in the Treaty of Greenville in That same year, the State of Connecticut sold most of the reserved lands to the CONNECTICUT LAND CO., and established a school.

The Western Reserve had two parts. The western part of the region was known as the Fire Lands. The state gave plots of land in this area to people who had lost their property in the American Revolution.

The Connecticut government sold the eastern portion of the reserve to a group of thirty-five land speculators called the Connecticut Land. Beginning with a piece of western wilderness territory just south of Lake Erie, reserved by Connecticut for itself out of the lands deeded to the federal government inthe surveying, settling and growth of "New Connecticut," the state of Ohio, is a fascinating story of vision and optimism by men of courage and resourcefulness.5/5(4).
